This was an experiment. I wanted to see what I would look at if I had a blank in the middle with fine painting on the frame. You always look at the blank! This was explained by Kirk Varnedoe in his 2003 Mellon Lecture, at the Washington's National Gallery, in his comments on abstract art: βIt tries to be nothing, but it constantly could become something.
